Helicopter Rescue Context

Helicopter rescue is controlled by the rescue service, not by the yacht. The skipper's job is to follow instructions, prepare the vessel, brief the crew, and keep the casualty ready for transfer.

Expect noise, rotor wash, limited communication, and changing instructions. Keep the radio watch, secure loose gear, and keep crew where they have been told to be.

  • Follow Coastguard and aircraft instructions.
  • Secure loose gear before the helicopter arrives.
  • Do not fire flares unless requested.
  • Keep crew low, clipped on if appropriate, and away from lines and winch area.
