Lesson 1 of 1

When to Ask for Medical Advice

A key marine first-aid skill is recognising when the boat has reached the limit of onboard care. Medical advice by VHF or phone can help decide treatment, evacuation, diversion, or rendezvous.

Use the urgency of the casualty's condition to choose the call. Immediate grave danger may be Mayday. Urgent medical help or advice that is not immediately life-threatening may be Pan-Pan or the locally appropriate route. Follow local Coastguard procedures.

  • Call early when serious, uncertain, remote, or deteriorating.
  • Use Mayday for grave and imminent danger.
  • Use Pan-Pan for urgent help or advice where Mayday is not appropriate.
  • Keep the radio operator with accurate casualty updates.
