Last Resort Decision
Abandoning ship is one of the most serious decisions a skipper can make. The phrase to remember is not a slogan but a judgement: step up into the liferaft if possible. Leave only when the vessel is no longer the safer place.
Fire, sinking, uncontrollable flooding, structural failure, or rescue-service instruction can force abandonment. A frightening but floating vessel may still be safer than a raft.
- Do not abandon early through panic.
- Prepare while still aboard if time allows.
- Raise distress before abandoning if possible.
- Keep crew together and transfer in a controlled order.
