Liferaft Purpose and Limits
A liferaft is a last-resort survival platform when the vessel can no longer keep the crew safer. It provides flotation, shelter, visibility, and packed survival equipment, but it is cramped, unstable, wet, and much harder to manage than a boat.
Specification, capacity, service date, stowage, launch method, painter access, and crew knowledge all matter. The best liferaft is one the crew can launch and board under stress.
- Choose a raft appropriate to vessel, route, crew, and regulations.
- Know the service date and contents level.
- Stow it where it can be launched if the boat is disabled.
- Brief the crew on painter, launch, inflation, and boarding.
