Short Passage Plan
A short powerboat passage still needs planning. Speed can hide weak preparation until fuel, weather, daylight, tide, or sea state changes. A simple written plan should cover route, hazards, weather, tide/current, fuel, crew, communications, and turn-back points.
Do not plan only for the outbound leg. The return may face wind against tide, darkness, lower fuel, tired crew, or a closed slipway.
- Plan outbound and return.
- Mark hazards, speed limits, no-wash areas, and safe water.
- Check weather, tide/current, and daylight.
- Set turn-back points before departure.
| Plan item | Powerboat question | Example check |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel | Enough for plan, reserve, and diversion? | Known tank level and consumption |
| Weather | Will wind/sea suit boat and crew? | Forecast plus local effects |
| Tide/current | Will launch, route, and recovery work? | Depth, streams, slip access |
| Communications | Can we call for help? | VHF/phone charged and protected |
