Short Passage Plan

A short powerboat passage still needs planning. Speed can hide weak preparation until fuel, weather, daylight, tide, or sea state changes. A simple written plan should cover route, hazards, weather, tide/current, fuel, crew, communications, and turn-back points.

Do not plan only for the outbound leg. The return may face wind against tide, darkness, lower fuel, tired crew, or a closed slipway.

  • Plan outbound and return.
  • Mark hazards, speed limits, no-wash areas, and safe water.
  • Check weather, tide/current, and daylight.
  • Set turn-back points before departure.
