Lesson 1 of 1

Lookout and Safe Speed

COLREGs apply to powerboats as much as to larger vessels. A proper lookout means using sight, hearing, and all available means, including crew, to understand risk of collision.

Safe speed is not the posted maximum. It is the speed that lets you take proper and effective action in the visibility, traffic density, manoeuvrability, background lights, sea state, and hazards.

  • Keep a proper lookout at all times.
  • Slow down when visibility, traffic, or hazards increase.
  • Make early and obvious avoiding action.
  • Do not rely on being small or fast to avoid responsibility.
