  • Explain ramp safety, trailer checks, painter control, wind and tide, and recovery planning.
  • Apply launching to a realistic onboard situation.
  • Recall the core check: inspect the slip before committing the trailer.

A self-guided revision companion that explains essential concepts, then helps you practise and test them. It supports—but does not replace—recognised instruction, practical training, assessment or certification. Access is a one-time payment, not a subscription.

Lesson 1 of 1

Launch Site Assessment

Launching starts with the site, not the trailer. Assess slipway condition, gradient, tide, current, wind direction, lee shore risk, traffic, pedestrians, depth, obstructions, weed, mud, and where the tow vehicle can safely stop.

A safe launch has a plan for boat control as soon as it floats. Lines, fenders, crew positions, engine start, parking, and recovery route should be agreed before the boat is on the move.

  • Inspect the slip before committing the trailer.
  • Check tide height and whether the slip will still be usable for recovery.
  • Prepare lines and fenders before entering the water.
  • Keep people clear of winch cables, slopes, and moving trailers.
