Slow Is Control
Close-quarters powerboat handling is about short bursts of power, neutral, steering effect, and planning. Speed creates damage and removes thinking time. Slow handling gives time to correct.
Most small powerboats steer because propeller thrust is directed by the outboard or drive. In neutral there is little or no steering effect, but the boat keeps carrying way.
- Use short positive bursts, then neutral.
- Plan an escape route before entering tight spaces.
- Use wind and tide/current rather than fighting them late.
- Keep hands and feet inside; do not fend off with limbs.
| Factor | Effect | Handling response |
|---|---|---|
| Wind | Blows bow and high sides | Approach with allowance and escape room |
| Tide/current | Moves whole boat | Work into it when practical |
| Prop thrust | Gives steering under power | Use controlled bursts |
| Momentum | Boat keeps moving | Use neutral early and plan stopping distance |
