Lesson 1 of 1

Anchoring a Powerboat

Anchoring starts with choosing a safe spot: depth, seabed, swinging room, tide/current, wind forecast, traffic, lee shore, cables/pipelines, and whether the anchor and rode suit the boat.

Lower the anchor under control, pay out enough scope for conditions, set it gently, check transit or electronic position, and keep monitoring. Do not throw chain/anchor where it can foul people or tubes.

  • Choose depth, seabed, and swinging room.
  • Use adequate scope for conditions and rode type.
  • Check the anchor has set.
  • Keep a plan for dragging or engine failure.
