Radar in Fog Is Not a Permission Slip

Radar is valuable in restricted visibility, but fitting radar does not make normal cruising speed safe. The skipper still needs proper lookout, safe speed, sound signals, lights, and early risk assessment.

The most dangerous error is thinking the screen has removed uncertainty. In fog, uncertainty is the operating condition.

  • Use radar as one available means.
  • Proceed at a safe speed for the conditions.
  • Post extra lookout where possible.
  • Use required sound signals and navigation lights.
