Why Buoyage Matters

Buoyage turns the chart into visible navigation. Marks show channels, hazards, safe water, special areas, and directions into harbour.

Essential Navigation learners need recognition plus action: identify the mark, connect it to the chart, and decide which side or area is safe.

  • Lateral marks guide channels and harbour approaches.
  • Cardinal marks indicate where safer water lies around a hazard.
  • Safe water marks indicate navigable water around the mark.
  • Special marks identify an area or feature, not necessarily safe water.
