Lesson 1 of 1
Tidal Awareness
Tidal awareness at this level is about timing and margin. You need to know whether the water is rising or falling, when high and low water occur, and whether there will be enough depth for the route.
A small craft can be safe at one time and aground later in the same place. Tides turn charted depths into usable decisions.
- High water is the local peak of the tide.
- Low water is the local minimum of the tide.
- Drying areas can uncover as the tide falls.
- Tide times and heights vary by place.
