Independent study · no certification. Details

Compass South Africa is an independent validation pilot and is not affiliated with or endorsed by SAMSA or South African Sailing. It does not issue a skipper's ticket or certificate.

Start with the vessel, operating category, and certificate route

SAMSA's current national skipper regime applies to commercial small vessels and to specified pleasure craft, including sailing pleasure vessels 9 metres or more and power-driven pleasure vessels with engines over 15 HP. The correct certificate then depends on operating area, vessel limits, evidence and examination. Compass awards none of these.

Sailing route and issuing boundary

SA Sailing states that it is the body authorised by SAMSA to issue South African sailing Certificates of Competence and directs candidates to recognised sailing schools or its examination route. Its public pathway starts at Day Skipper for less-experienced candidates or Coastal Skipper for very experienced entrants; a Compass international COLREGs course is not a South African skipper-ticket course.

Check prerequisites before booking

SA Sailing currently lists a minimum candidate age of 16, a valid marine-VHF operator certificate for Day Skipper and above, qualifying sea experience recorded in a logbook, and category-specific examination evidence. Medical, eyesight, first-aid and experience rules vary by certificate, so verify the current application pack and SAMSA notices rather than relying on this summary.

Why this remains a pilot

This free diagnostic samples international collision-rule decisions only. It omits the complete South African legal, vessel-category, safety-equipment, local-water, radio, sea-service, examination and practical-performance overlay; no paid South African companion will be proposed before qualified local review.

Ninety-day evidence gate

A paid proposal is considered only after at least 200 completed diagnostics, 50 consented product-interest leads, and three qualified local reviewer or partner conversations.
