Parts of a boat: bow, stern and more

Learn bow, stern, fore, aft and the main parts of a boat with an interactive sailing yacht and powerboat anatomy guide. It is an independent revision aid, not official RYA training or assessment.

Direct answer

The main parts of a boat include the hull, bow, stern, keel, rudder, deck, mast, boom, sails, cockpit, guardrails, cleats, winches, and safety equipment. A powerboat shares many hull and deck terms but adds propulsion, trim, and engine-room features.

Learn the concept

What are the front and back of a boat called?

The front end is the bow and the back end is the stern. Fore or forward means towards the bow; aft means towards the stern. Amidships means around the middle of the vessel. These terms stay fixed to the boat, unlike a person's left and right.

How should you learn boat parts?

Start with the whole vessel, then connect each name to a job: a cleat secures a line, a winch helps control a loaded line, the keel contributes lateral resistance and stability, and the rudder steers when water flows across it. Use the interactive views to keep every part in context.
