Short answer
Choose a recognised theory course when you need the full taught syllabus, instructor support, the course assessment and the certificate or record issued through that training route. Choose an independent revision app when you already have teaching or experience and want flexible retrieval practice, explanations and weak-topic feedback. A revision app complements a course; it does not turn itself into one.

Official or legal requirements
Only the recognised training route can define its course delivery, assessment and resulting certificate. Compass is independent revision support and awards no RYA course certificate or practical qualification.

Training centres set delivery dates, tutor contact, support windows, included materials, assessment arrangements and entry expectations; compare their current written offer before paying.

Start with the outcome you actually need
A recognised Day Skipper theory course is a taught route through chartwork, tidal knowledge, pilotage, meteorology and the collision regulations. The RYA describes a course of about 40 hours plus exam time and permits classroom, online or distance-learning delivery through the training system.
An independent revision app has a different job: it helps you recall concepts, practice decisions, see why an answer is wrong and revisit weak areas. Completing Compass content does not complete an RYA course and does not award an RYA certificate.
Compare teaching and feedback, not just screen time
Ask a course provider who answers technical questions, what chart pack and publications are included, how exercises are marked, how long tutor support lasts and how the assessment is administered. For an app, ask whether explanations are original, sources are reviewed, weak topics are surfaced and progress is useful between formal lessons.
Recorded material alone is not automatically a complete course, and a large question count is not automatically good revision. The useful test is whether the product helps you explain and apply the syllabus safely.
Use both when the jobs are complementary
A common high-value sequence is course teaching first, short retrieval practice between lessons, then mixed revision before assessment and practical training. This keeps the instructor responsible for teaching and the app focused on repetition, confidence and diagnosis.
If you are refreshing an older qualification or returning after time away, revision may reveal whether focused practice is enough or whether you need current instruction. Treat a low readiness result as a prompt to learn, not merely to repeat the same test.

Before paying, write down: the outcome you need; whether a certificate is required; what prior teaching you already have; who will answer questions; and what practical step follows. If you cannot answer those, compare the course pathway first. If you can, choose the smallest product that closes the real gap.
