TRS Basics

Tropical revolving storms are intense rotating low-pressure systems known regionally as hurricanes, cyclones, or typhoons. Avoidance is the primary seamanship skill; close-quarter tactics are a last resort.

They need warm water, suitable atmospheric conditions, and enough Coriolis effect, so seasons and basins matter. A good ocean plan avoids cyclone seasons or has a defensible strategy for the region.

  • Avoidance beats tactics.
  • Know regional seasons and warning services.
  • Track pressure, swell, cloud, and forecast changes.
  • Give the system a large safety margin.
