Map the Ocean Pathway

What you will learn

Distinguish the six linked Ocean pathway stages and state what evidence each stage can—and cannot—supply.

Yachtmaster Ocean is not one lesson, one passage or one examination. It links prior navigation knowledge, shorebased Ocean study, a qualifying passage, on-board astro records, the Ocean examination and the learner's underlying certificate route.

Start by naming the output of each stage. Foundation knowledge supports study. Shorebased study can build knowledge and may produce a course completion certificate. A qualifying passage produces experience evidence only when the current distance, duration, offshore, role, vessel and recency rules are met. On-board records expose the astro work. The examination assesses the submitted passage evidence and Ocean knowledge. The award route depends on the stated prerequisite certificate as well as the exam result.

These outputs are related but not interchangeable. A revision record is not sea-time evidence. Completing this revision module does not create a shorebased course completion certificate. A shorebased certificate does not replace the qualifying passage or oral examination. A long voyage does not prove the candidate held the required responsibility. A written-exam exemption does not mean the candidate has passed the Ocean examination.

Use the pathway as an evidence map rather than a promise of eligibility. For every claim—foundation, course, passage, sight, exemption or award—write down the current official source and the record that supports it. If either is missing, label the state unverified instead of filling the gap from memory.

Ocean pathway evidence board

Separate learning, experience, evidence, examination and award

Select a learner state. Each card shows what the available evidence can support, what it cannot support and which current source must be checked. Every state is complete in text and does not depend on colour.

  1. 1Foundation
  2. 2Shorebased study
  3. 3Qualifying passage
  4. 4On-board evidence
  5. 5Ocean exam
  6. 6Award route

These stages are related, but they are not substitutes for one another. A revision record is not sea-time evidence; an exemption is not a pass; and a pass route does not always issue the same certificate.

What it supports

The learner may be building the knowledge expected for astro navigation, ocean meteorology and passage planning. A course completion certificate may also affect the written-test route if its final examination was invigilated at an RYA recognised training centre.

What it does not prove

Study, revision access or a shorebased certificate does not create qualifying-passage evidence, satisfy the oral examination or award a Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence.

Next evidence action

Separate the study record from the experience record. Use the current RYA Ocean exam and qualifying-passage pages before planning evidence or booking an examination.

Verify with

Current course-completion certificate, how its final exam was conducted, underlying certificate, passage plan and the current RYA booking instructions.

Revision classification aid only. This board cannot determine passage eligibility, certificate equivalence, examination exemption, submission acceptance, competence, a pass or an award; authenticate a log, testimonial, certificate or sight; replace the current RYA course, qualifying-passage and exam pages, G158, booking instructions, a recognised training centre or examiner; or plan or direct a real ocean passage. Requirements and administrative instructions can change, so the current official route controls an application.

Worked example

Maya has finished online Ocean revision and has logged a 700-mile voyage, but has not checked her role evidence, the planned shortest navigable route, the continuous offshore segment or the current exam prerequisites.

  1. 1Classify the revision completion as study evidence only; it is not an RYA shorebased course certificate or exam eligibility decision.
  2. 2Classify 700 miles as one passage fact, not a complete qualifying-passage conclusion.
  3. 3Create separate checks for route, distance run, duration, offshore segment, dates, vessel, planning participation, responsible capacity, astro work and underlying certificate.
  4. 4Use the current RYA exam and qualifying-passage pages before deciding what can be claimed or booked.

Sense check: The resulting pathway contains several verified or unverified evidence states; it does not turn one impressive number into an eligibility verdict.

Build a claim-to-evidence map

Before contacting an examiner, list each claim you expect to make: prior certificate, course completion, written exemption, qualifying voyage, responsible role and astro records.

  1. 1. Claim

Write one narrow statement without combining several requirements.

  2. 2. Record

Name the certificate, log, worksheet, chart, testimonial or current official page that supports it.

  3. 3. Gap

Mark missing, conflicting or remembered-only evidence as unverified.

Sense check: Another person should be able to see why every pathway claim is supported without treating course access or mileage alone as proof.

Common mistake or limitation

  • Treating the shorebased course, qualifying passage and Certificate of Competence examination as one interchangeable product.
  • Using a revision completion screen as evidence of recognised course completion or examination exemption.
  • Allowing a plausible passage story to replace current rules and contemporaneous records.

Recap

  • Foundation, study, passage, astro evidence, examination and award are linked but distinct.
  • Every claim needs both a current source and a supporting record.
  • An exemption removes only the examination component named by the current rule.
