Ocean Plan as a System
An ocean passage plan is not a long coastal passage plan with more snacks. Distance, fatigue, weather exposure, communications, maintenance, medical self-reliance, and delayed rescue change the standard of preparation.
The plan should connect route, season, weather systems, crew capability, watchkeeping, stores, water, fuel, spares, charging, communications, emergency equipment, and landfall strategy.
- Choose route and season for weather risk, not convenience only.
- Build reserves for water, fuel, food, power, and crew energy.
- Prepare the yacht for repair and self-reliance.
- Plan landfall and diversion options before departure.
