Lesson 1 of 1
First Minutes in the Raft
The first minutes in a liferaft set the tone. Survivors are cold, frightened, wet, and possibly injured. Turn panic into tasks: headcount, injuries, painter, sea anchor, canopy, bailer, inflation checks, communications, lookout, and warmth.
Do not let the raft drift unmanaged if a sea anchor is available and appropriate. It can improve stability and reduce drift.
- Headcount and injury check first.
- Secure or cut painter according to danger.
- Stream sea anchor if appropriate.
- Bail, close canopy, and organise equipment.
