Cold-Water Timeline

Cold water creates phases of risk: cold shock in the first moments, swimming failure as muscles cool, hypothermia over time, and collapse during or after rescue. Survival actions change with each phase.

A lifejacket, sprayhood, calm breathing, staying still, and getting out of the water all improve the odds. Strong swimmers can still be beaten by cold shock and loss of coordination.

  • Control breathing and keep the airway clear.
  • Do not waste energy swimming unless rescue or safety is very close.
  • Get as much body out of the water as possible.
  • Keep lifejacket, sprayhood, and lights working for you.
