Safety Management System Thinking
A commercial vessel needs a managed safety approach. That may be a formal safety management system or documented procedures appropriate to the operation, vessel, and code. The point is that safety is planned, checked, recorded, and reviewed.
The skipper should know where procedures are, what checks are required, what defects mean for the trip, and who has authority to stop the vessel from sailing.
- Safety management must be practical, not just paperwork.
- Checks should be recorded and acted on.
- Defects need assessment before departure.
- Crew must know emergency procedures.
