Lesson 1 of 1
Required and Suitable Equipment
Commercial safety equipment must be both required and suitable. The applicable code or procedure may state carriage requirements, but the skipper still needs to check condition, access, crew knowledge, and trip suitability.
Equipment that is out of date, unserviced, inaccessible, unknown to crew, or unsuitable for the operating area may fail the professional test even if it appears on an inventory.
- Check the applicable requirements for the vessel and operation.
- Confirm service dates and expiry dates.
- Make equipment accessible and briefed.
- Record checks and defects.
| Equipment | Check | Common failure |
|---|---|---|
| Lifejackets | Fit, lights, service, straps | Wrong size or expired light |
| Liferaft | Service, capacity, stowage, access | Out of service or inaccessible |
| Fire equipment | Type, service, location, crew knowledge | Blocked or expired extinguisher |
| Comms | VHF, DSC, batteries, EPIRB/PLB | No one knows activation procedure |
