  • Explain who PPR is for, when it is needed, and why this is only revision.
  • Apply PPR to a realistic onboard situation.
  • Recall the core check: pPR is normally required for new and revalidating RYA commercial endorsement holders; check current RYA exemptions, including specified MCA Deck Officer certificates.

A self-guided revision companion that explains essential concepts, then helps you practise and test them. It supports—but does not replace—recognised instruction, practical training, assessment or certification. Access is a one-time payment, not a subscription.

Lesson 1 of 3

Why PPR Exists

Professional Practices and Responsibilities is for people using RYA qualifications commercially. It is about the duties, decisions, and legal framework that sit around the practical skill of driving or skippering a vessel.

The RYA currently describes PPR as compulsory for new and revalidating RYA Commercial Endorsement holders. It may be completed before the endorsement application or renewal, and the PPR certificate is used for the first application or next renewal. Compass PPR revision is independent preparation: it is not the RYA online course, completion certificate, commercial endorsement, or renewal evidence.

The course is not a replacement for the applicable Code of Practice, local regulation, employer procedures, insurance conditions, or legal advice. The professional habit is to know which framework applies before accepting work.

  • PPR is normally required for new and revalidating RYA commercial endorsement holders; check current RYA exemptions, including specified MCA Deck Officer certificates.
  • A commercial endorsement changes the context in which a qualification is used.
  • The skipper or operator must know which rules apply to the operation.
  • Revision should focus on judgement, duty of care, and evidence of compliance.

Lesson 2 of 3

Commercial Endorsement Context

A commercial endorsement lets an eligible RYA certificate be used professionally within the applicable limits. It does not remove the need for the right vessel coding, medical fitness, radio certificate, first aid, sea survival, local authorisations, or employer procedures where required.

A professional skipper should be able to explain the job, the vessel category, operating area, passenger or crew status, safety management arrangements, and the limits of their own certificate.

  • Check certificate, medical, radio, first aid, sea survival, and endorsement requirements.
  • Know the vessel's operating limits and coding status.
  • Do not accept a job that relies on assumptions about legality.
  • Keep documents current and available for inspection when required.

Lesson 3 of 3

Assessment Mindset

PPR questions often test professional judgement rather than memory alone. The safe answer usually identifies the applicable requirement, checks evidence, controls risk, communicates clearly, and refuses pressure that would make the operation unsafe or non-compliant.

When unsure, the professional response is not to bluff. Check the relevant code, operator procedure, harbour direction, employer, RYA/MCA guidance, or competent authority before acting.

  • Identify the framework before deciding.
  • Keep records that prove checks were made.
  • Escalate uncertainty before passengers or crew are exposed.
  • Do not let commercial pressure override safety or compliance.
