Lesson 1 of 1
Safe Manning
Safe manning means having enough competent people for the operation, vessel, conditions, passenger load, emergency response, and legal or code requirements. It is not just the minimum number of names on a roster.
A skipper should think through normal operation, peak workload, emergency workload, breaks, seasickness, injury, and the possibility that one crew member becomes unavailable.
- Check legal or code manning requirements.
- Match crew competence to tasks and conditions.
- Plan for fatigue and sickness.
- Do not rely on one person for every critical role.
