Target Strength

Target strength depends on size, shape, material, height, aspect, range, sea state, rain, and radar settings. A steel ship is usually easier to detect than a low small craft, but no single rule is guaranteed.

A target can appear, fade, split, merge, or hide in clutter. Radar interpretation is about probability and cross-checking, not certainty from one sweep.

  • High, hard, angular targets usually return more energy.
  • Low, rounded, wet, or poorly reflecting targets can be weak.
  • Aspect changes can alter echo strength.
  • Clutter and settings affect target visibility.
