Controls Change the Truth You See
Radar controls are not cosmetic. Gain, sea clutter, rain clutter, range scale, tuning, brilliance, trails, and orientation affect which echoes are visible and how easy they are to interpret.
A clean-looking display can be dangerous if weak real targets have been suppressed. A busy display can be dangerous if clutter hides the returns that matter.
- Change one control at a time.
- Know what each adjustment is meant to improve.
- Recheck the effect on weak targets after reducing clutter.
- Use the right range scale for the question you are asking.

Gain, Sea Clutter, and Rain Clutter
Gain controls receiver sensitivity. Too little gain hides weak targets; too much gain fills the display. Sea clutter control suppresses returns near the vessel from waves. Rain clutter control reduces returns from precipitation.
The danger is over-suppression. If a control removes clutter, it may also remove small craft, buoys, or weak hazards. Always retune with a known target or range scale in mind.

- Rain clutter can mask or reveal weather and targets inside rain.
- Automatic settings are useful but still need operator checking.

Range Scale and Orientation
Range scale decides whether you are looking for early collision risk, pilotage detail, harbour clutter, or landfall. Long range gives context; short range gives detail. You often need both.
Display orientation affects interpretation. Head-up, course-up, and north-up presentations each have advantages and traps. The important point is knowing which mode you are using before interpreting bearing or movement.

- Use more than one range scale when the situation is developing.
- Know whether the display is head-up, course-up, or north-up.

Set-Up Routine
A safe routine prevents random button pressing. Start with the display readable, choose a range scale, tune/gain appropriately, reduce clutter only as needed, identify fixed echoes, then check moving contacts.
Whenever the conditions change, repeat the routine. Rain squalls, short steep seas, harbour clutter, and range changes all justify another look at the controls.
- Do not tune once and forget it.
- Use known land or buoy returns to sense whether the picture is reasonable.
- Treat sudden disappearance of a target as a warning, not proof it has gone.
- Practice controls in clear weather before relying on them in fog.
