Lesson 1 of 1
Cold Shock
Cold shock is the immediate reaction to sudden cold-water immersion. It can cause gasping, panic, fast breathing, poor coordination, and rapid loss of swimming ability.
The first survival task is to keep the airway clear and breathing under control. From the boat, the crew task is fast recognition, safe recovery, Mayday/Pan-Pan judgement, and prevention of further heat loss.
- Cold shock is immediate and can affect strong swimmers.
- A lifejacket helps keep the airway clear during the first minutes.
- Recover the person safely without putting more crew in the water.
- Call for help early if recovery or condition is uncertain.
