The Beginner Passage Plan
A short passage plan is a clear route with timings, hazards, weather and tide checks, fuel margin, crew preparation, and alternatives. It should be simple enough to use while the boat is moving.
The goal is not paperwork. The goal is fewer surprises: know where you are going, when to leave, where not to go, and when to turn back.
- Set a realistic destination and return option.
- Identify hazards, shallow water, traffic areas, and local restrictions.
- Check tide, weather, daylight, and fuel for both directions.
- Brief the crew and leave details ashore when appropriate.
