What Pilotage Means
Pilotage is close-in navigation using visible features, marks, bearings, transits, depth, and a prepared sequence of actions. It is most useful near harbours, rivers, moorings, channels, and hazards.
A beginner pilotage plan should be short, visual, and practical. It should tell you what you expect to see next, where you need to be, and what you will do if the picture does not match.
- Pilotage is close-in navigation, not just harbour entry.
- Use visual cues that are easy to identify from the cockpit.
- Plan before the busy part starts.
- Have an abort or waiting option before the entrance.
