Electronics as Support
GPS, chart plotters, phones, and tablets are useful tools, but they support navigation rather than replacing it. They can fail, lose power, use the wrong settings, show outdated data, or encourage heads-down boating.
The beginner standard is to use electronics with a chart sense: know what the screen is showing, cross-check it visually, and keep a backup for position and communication.
- Know the difference between position, route, track, heading, and course over ground.
- Cross-check screen position with marks, depth, and visual features.
- Keep devices charged and protected from water.
- Do not let screen work replace lookout.
