Choosing Shelter
Anchoring and mooring start with location. Shelter depends on wind direction, wave direction, tidal stream, seabed, depth, swinging room, local restrictions, and the forecast for the whole stay.
A good anchorage at midday may be poor after the tide turns or wind shifts. Beginners should choose simple, spacious locations with clear escape routes.
- Check wind, tide, depth, seabed, and room to swing.
- Avoid channels, cables, restricted areas, and mooring fields unless permitted.
- Plan how you will leave if conditions change.
- Do not anchor where you will dry out unless that is intended and suitable.
