Traffic Decisions in Restricted Water
Meeting, crossing, and overtaking decisions inland are shaped by restricted depth, narrow fairways, bends, bridges, lock approaches, commercial traffic, signs, and local rules.
The safe answer is rarely just 'who gives way?' It is more often: where is the fairway, which vessel is constrained, what signs or lights control the section, and can the manoeuvre be completed before the next restriction?
- Keep to the required side or route unless signs or local rules say otherwise.
- Do not create a close-quarters situation at bends, bridges, locks, or narrow sections.
- Give larger or constrained vessels room early.
- Use clear sound, radio, or visual signals where the waterway requires them.
