Lesson 1 of 1

Controlled Water

Locks, movable bridges, narrow cuts, and bridge openings are controlled water. Traffic lights, boards, lock-keeper instructions, VHF directions, and waiting areas decide when you may enter.

The safest small-craft skipper is predictable: slow early, stay out of the fairway while waiting, prepare lines and crew, and move only when the signal or instruction is clear.

  • Treat lock and bridge approaches as controlled until proven otherwise.
  • Do not enter on a red or closed signal.
  • Use waiting pontoons or holding areas without blocking traffic.
  • Prepare lines, fenders, crew roles, and engine control before the gate or bridge opens.
