  • Explain large inland craft, tows, pushed convoys, ferries, passenger vessels, and hazardous cargo signals.
  • Apply tows to a realistic onboard situation.
  • Recall the core check: large vessels may not be able to leave the channel.

Why Commercial Traffic Changes the Decision

Inland commercial vessels can be long, deep, heavy, and committed to the fairway. They may be pushing barges, towing, crossing on a ferry route, working on the channel, or carrying dangerous goods.

Small craft have more agility but less authority to create risk. The practical standard is to anticipate commercial traffic and keep clear before the situation becomes close-quarters.

  • Large vessels may not be able to leave the channel.
  • Stopping distance and turning room can be much greater than they appear.
  • Wash from small craft can still damage moored vessels, works, or cargo operations.
  • Do not cross ahead if the larger vessel would need to alter course or speed sharply.
